Just got back Friday from completing the first of many bike classes that I have planned. Went to Colorado Springs for the Barnett Bicycle Institutes, bicycle assembly and maintenance class . While I was there I also did the one night spoked-wheel lacing class.

It was a great class with great classmates. In the class of 16 guys (I was surprised there was NO women) we had people like me who are mostly enthusiasts with an idea. We had 1 cat 2 racer, 1 junior cat 1 racer. A bicycle messenger from D.C. Several shop owners,several shop mechanics and a guy that works for American adventure cyclists.

This was just a one week class that covers slightly more basic stuff . We did get into wheels pretty good however, which was the main reason I took the class.

While there a few of us went up to the olympic training center . Max, who was only 17 years old and getting high school credit to take this class is on the junior olympic cycling team. He gave us a quick tour of the place.

So for now the plan is to go back in February for the BRO class. Bicycle repair and overhaul. This is a 2 week class that gets more detailed. There is also a suspension class the following week that I haven't decided if I'm taking yet.

Now I have about $5000.00 worth of tools to buy...:)

Toolboard step:1

Finally had some time today after work to get to work on my new tool board. This board has to have a couple of capabilities.

It must be large enough to hold all the bike tools I'll mostly use.
It must be portable to the extent that it will be moved about twice a year.

So I decided on a piece of 3/8 plywood. I did not use pegboard as I have now in the barn because I didn''t want to have to buy a ton of hooks to fit it and can instead use finishing nails of which I have a ton. Also, pegboard looks kinda sloppy, and by using nails I can be more flexible with where I place items.

So away I go building a new tool board.

A clean slate to start. Obviously the goal here is to put the most used tools in the middle and center and trying to anticipate the best fit for the lesser used tools.

As a guide I have a little help from Jim Langley's bicycle tools toolboard site

Mine is going to be a bit rougher looking than this but it gives some great ideas.

It's also difficult getting started at this time as I made a huge tool order this week and I'm waiting on a bunch of stuff to get here next week. Important things like my truing stand, spoke wrenches, chain tool, spoke ruler, etc.

I do have enough to get started though and here is where I currently stand.

That's a magnet strip in the middle that will be removable and currently has feeler gauges, small metric ruler and some scribing tools. To the right is a small board that will hold screwdrivers and some 1/4 inch drive ratchet extensions. Next to that is a set of three ratchets with 4,5,6 hex wrenches attached. Above those are some regular allen wrenches and an allen Y wrench. Then above that is a set of metric open end wrenches and to the right of those is an assortment of bottom bracket tools. Over to the left is a chain whip, pedal wrench, 3rd and 4th hand brake tools a metal hammer and a rubber hammer. Finally at the bottom is some pliers, a digital caliper and a few sharpies (one black and 2 silver, very important tools as BBI taught me)

So for the winter this board will be placed in the basement above a small workbench that I have down there. One problem:

Much better, now it's ready for a small vise. I'm thinking a small vise on the left side of the workbench so that the truing stand can sit off the right end of the bench and be mostly out of the way when not in use. Tune in tomorrow.

I was a 'Cycle Angel' in this year's Ride to Work Day in Melbourne. The idea was for me to help out anyone in need.

Unfortunately, I think the weather scared off all but a handful of first-timers. And, fortunately for them, none of them required my assistance. I did, however, get my ugly mug on national TV, being interviewed about my role.

Later that day, I took a few pix with the real camera. This is one of them.

Columbia River Gorge Bicycling

Hitomi went down last year in October and rode along the Historic Columbia River Highway and instead of spending my weekend doing the RASPsody bicycle ride we decided to make a weekend of touring. We rode from Portland into Cascade Locks, spend the night at a Best Western, and returned via Washington State Route 14.

Hitomi wanted to ride her road bicycle, which she hadn't for a few years, and so I had to carry all the luggage. Since my road bicycle has no rack (or braze ons for one) I took my singlespeed bicycle with a rack--with trepidation. Climbing some big hills isn't a big deal if the grade isn't too bad but it still is a lot harder on the legs. Adding in 30 pounds of stuff, though, it actually turned out to be not as bad as I had feared.

We took the train to Portland. I spent most of the time playing Gyakuten Kenji (in Japanese) and listening to music. And eating food we had brought on board. From in front of the station, we cycled toward a quiet brew house called the Tug Boat Brewing Company, me trying to remember back the directions given to me by a pedicab driver.

Day one we slept in. And had a leisurely breakfast at a local Grand Central Bakery, the same place we had gone for Kumori Con a few years ago. I get more excited about going to a bakery for breakfast than I do any other place. (And it is a shame that Safeway simply doesn't carry any great bread. Their Italian style loaves are decent but are just a first-order approximation.)

So after finally setting out, and after being on light rail for about twenty minutes, it was already getting into lunchtime and weren't to our first waterfall yet.

I hadn't seen any of the famous Gorge waterfalls except in pictures and in movies. Hitomi and I bicycled and hiked to see about 8 of them and hopefully we captured a few decent pictures. Without much of a hiking guide it was kind of hard to figure out where the trails actually went to, since there was a surprising lack of information at any of the trail heads. With such a large number of tourists, you'd think the place would be replete with signage. But instead it was designed perhaps intentionally to discourage casual hikers. In places you'd normally see a trail map there was almost no information about the actual place.

So we hiked in a fair bit more than I would have liked. It was getting late and we had to finally hit the road.

One section we road was on Interstate 84, which had a fair bit of construction in the shoulder lane, putting us nearly in the flow of traffic. Not cool. The rest of the time was fine but with all the traffic noise, you feel better when you're wearing headphones. (Hitomi wouldn't let me though.)

Cascade Locks was a town built around some (once) important boat locks. The park, the site of the locks, talked a bit about the history of the construction project, which turned out to be quite an arduous 20+ year project. None of the interpretive material mentioned why the locks were no longer necessary, failing to mention that the whole project was rendered moot by the construction of the Bonneville Dam 40 years later. The town seems to carry on as a tourist destination.

We had dinner at a decent cafeteria-style dining place next to the hotel. Hitomi ordered salmon, which she said was good last time. My mistake: I ordered a "pulled pork" sandwich, whose meat resembled sliced deli meat (ham) bathed in BBQ sauce. The pie was pretty good--how can you mess up pie?--but then the a la mode arrived as soft-serve ice cream.

Day two: We had breakfast (again) late, in their free continental breakfast room, which was actually supposed to be closed but we got in anyway. Around 11 we crossed over the Bridge of the Gods, which is pretty scary like I've heard, since the road surface is just metal grating and not easy to bike, especially in the cross wind. Then it was mostly rolling hills and a few small breaks until the climb up Cape Hope, which you see in the photo above, where we took pictures.

It seems like the local Asian community groups (churches, youth groups, etc.) are into touring the area as all the large tourist groups were Asian, including a bus of Japanese students. (I wonder why all the immigration from South Korea--is it really bad there?) Anyway, there I was at the railing, adjusting my genitalia as you must with bike shorts, and a moment later is a girl with a digital camera pointed my way through a truck window.

Past Cape Hope, and down into Camas, the scenery turns to crap and the highway fills with traffic. Yes, bicycling along a busy highway through suburbia is just as unpleasant as you might expect. Eventually we get off and go along a poor surface old highway which is a little nicer in some ways and make our way to I-205.

Now supposedly there's a bike path from I-205 over the Columbia but I couldn't figure out the map, and end up (with Hitomi) on the bridge deck itself, in the shoulder of course, but I get the feeling I'm in the wrong place. Luckily this part is over quickly but there's quite the interchange near the airport and it takes a bit of work to get on to the real I-205 bike path. By this point, Hitomi's tired and she gives up, taking light rail into downtown.

I press on and ride the rest of the way, quite hungry. For me, getting hungry happens quite suddenly. I have less than 3-4 miles to go but I decide to press on and get the last bit over with quickly. And then I am downtown and awaiting Hitomi. I find myself trying to simultaneously unwrap and consume a box of CalorieMate, deliberately trying to chew and not choke the powdery matter. Hitomi and I finally meet at the Portland Saturday (& Sunday) Market by the river and I spend about an hour eating two meals, a large beer, and half an ice cream. I think she's a bit disappointed to not get to shop for a dress. (And then I go buy a bucket of Chinese noodles to take on the train home.)

The train arrives back in Seattle on time (for once) and we ride back home, satisfied.

Unplanned Brick: Getting off the DL!

I sprained my ankle trail running two weeks ago in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. Since Ultrathoner already took the time to write about our outing so no need for me to duplicate it.

Now for a First Aid Lesson

A sprain is the actual stretching or tearing of the ligaments in my case the foot. Thankfully it was a moderate sprain without torn ligaments. For anyone who has not had a sprained ankle there will be point tenderness, swelling, bruising (maybe not) and pain with any sudden movement.

First aid for a sprain is simply damage control. Remember RICE when dealing with sprains and other traumas. It is an acronym for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. To speed recover RICE should be maintained for at least 72 hours (3 days) after the injury.

Rest: Back off the stress and strain of walking, normal motion and of course more of the activity that caused it. Face it you are on the disability list.
Ice: This step reduces swelling and helps with the pain. For effectiveness maintain ice for 20 minutes 3-4 times a day. Apply a compression wrap (i.e. ACE brand) after icing.
Compression: To prevent excess swelling and provide some support the injury should be wrapped. Do not make it too tight!
Elevation: This also helps to reduce the swelling. Elevate the injured joint above your heart level as much as possible.

The Return

I told myself I would take it easy for two weeks to let the ankle heal. Easier said than done! After five days I was antsy for some exercise.

I decided to go for a ride this morning for exercise of course but also to see how the ankle would feel. A few miles from the house is the Cherry Creek State Park which has plenty of trails and roads to ride, run, etc.

Once I was in the park I noticed plenty of cyclists with numbers on their bikes and marked on their tricep and calf muscles. One of the many triathlons in Colorado and I was in the middle of the ride segment!

Being among members of the tribe (athletes in climbing, running and today riding) got me thinking about my training. Normally I focus on one objective, a mountain or ultrathon normally, and train towards completing it. Here were people that were swimming, riding and running all back-to-back; in this case 500 m swim, 10.5 mile bike and a 3.1 mile run.

I've never done a triathlon. Training for the swim segment is the only skill I'm lacking. As a scuba instructor for the last decade I know how to swim just not that far at one time.

I have several friends who reguarly compete in triathlons as frequently as I go after summits as a mountaineer.

I often hear their stories of training and races mentioning brick workouts--two activities done back-to-back. I have never done a brick. So as I rode around the reservoir in the cool morning air I decided I would go for a run after I got home.

If you never ran after riding 19 miles it is a strange sensation. My transition time was brief as I changed cloths and shoes before heading back out. My legs were off for the first half mile with twinges that were not normal. A short walk break to reset them helped as the rest of the run went stronger than I expected.

Brick workouts are not bad! I felt that I worked harder but my speed on the run was only a minute slower than my average. Back-to-back cross training, no matter what the activity, can only help conditioning. Focusing training on just one activity develops the muscles required for performance but often leads to neglect of secondary muscles creating an inbalance that can lead to training injuries. So mix it up! The change of routine will help the mental aspect of training also.

The ankle is 90+% healed. At least enough to run on flat roads. I will stay off the uneven trails for a few more weeks.

An upcoming random wandering...

The CDC's annual survey of obesity in the USA was recently published for 2008. Once again Colorado came in as the leanest state though the fit are still a minority when the obese and overweight are tallied together. An updated review of this state of the nation will build on my article from last year.

The Commute to TCS

I picked a very convenient neighborhood to live in, mostly for Hitomi's sake since I work, or at least used to work out of my home office. (By office I really mean kitchen counter, though I have plenty of space throughout the house I can be working instead.)

Since acquisition by TCS, I've been going into work about every other day. There's a couple of options:

1) Drive, which Google Maps estimates at taking 15 minutes, 25 in traffic. Requires $8 more for parking and gas etc. I have not tried, but this is not bad, theoretically. In the morning, getting to work is likely okay, especially since I usually start work a little late, like 9AM. Getting on I-5 in the afternoon is likely a slog.

2) Bus, which is about 30 minutes, plus 15 for walking. The walk takes me through Pike Place Market and nice parts of downtown, which means I can integrate shopping in with my commute. Bus fare is $1.75-$2.00 each way. On the 66, there's always a free seat it seems and on the way back I'm on one of the first few stops. I can listen to music, surf on my Blackberry, etc.

3) Bicycling, which is about 25-30 minutes there--I'm fast and it's mostly downhill--and about 35 on the way back, if I take Dexter Ave and Stone Way, a more bike friendly route than Eastlake. There's a freed lane (no parking) going southbound before 9AM all the way to South Lake Union, so I have a lane to myself, which is nice. Still, some's occasionally parked or stopped illegally in this lane.

So, at least on the good weather days, bicycling is the winner. If I had to commute daily, I'd probably bike in the morning and bus in the afternoon. The trick, of course, is getting a bus outside the Ride Free Zone.

Critical Mass: Riding SR99, Aurora Bridge

I'm not really a fan of Critical Mass, mostly because their routes of choice seems rather aimless.

However, on Friday, riders made an epic ride from Downtown Seattle on the Viaduct up to Golden Gardens. This is the sort of ride I'd like Critical Mass to do.

Their choice of route obviously has made a lot of drivers angry. Mostly they see the riders as selfish. In response I will say many people drive for purely selfish reasons, e.g. to a baseball game, and traffic gets much worse. Do we tell drivers on the way to Safeco Field to "fuck off" or wish for their death? (Maybe I do...a little.) Do accident victims who
block lanes of a highway deserve drivers' hate or perhaps pity?

As it turns out, most of 99 is actually open to cyclists. From Mercer Street onward, cyclists can use the road, though I would be scared to do so outside of a pack.

100 miles of Tour de Cure

Nintendo this year is a sponsor of "Tour de Cure", which is a bicycle ride to "benefit the American Diabetes Association."

Ironically, not too many people at Nintendo ride bicycles and video game companies in general don't tend to attract athletic people. At least in the programming departments. Still, the ride was more about fund raising than bicycling, I guess. Hitomi and I happened to get in because we weren't required to raise the requisite hundreds of dollars ($500?) to ride the event. And as a bonus, I got a coveted "Nintendo jersey, or actually Hitomi didn't receive her Small so received a Large she gave to me.

I planned to do about 100 miles, even though I still haven't fully recovered. I did ride on Thursday and Friday, about 30 and 20 miles respectively. But my upper respiratory system's been fairly congested so maybe taking it easier would have been smart? Hitomi was obviously not so well, so she decided on 45 miles.

The route was hilly. Nearly 6000 feet of elevation gain, and thus a serious climb every 10 miles or so. I paced myself at around 18-20 miles per hour on the flats but had an increasingly difficult time at the end, thanks to the heat and reduced energy. I looked at disdain at my odometer.

I started the ride late and therefore no Nintendo BBQ party at the end for me, just leftover sandwiches. It felt like I was slow but there were not so many 100 milers who left when I did. Hitomi waited for me, obviously, as well as Chris, a co-worker who also did 45 miles. They had BBQ.

I did enjoy the route, which went through a lot of mossy trees and around lakes and had views of snowy mountains. No jerk drivers. The route was well planned and avoided most of the busy roads which seem to be always widening and gathering more traffic as development and population spreads eastward towards the Cascades. There's still plenty of farm country to enjoy. The stops had simple food and friendly local volunteers. (I would have liked it if they used coolers rather than bottles of water. Most of us use reusable bottles and bottled water isn't much tastier.) Other riders were friendly and rode safely, for the most part.

Hitomi might have a few pictures up later, and I'll update this post at that time.

Until then, it's off to eat dinner.
